Residents Concerned Crematory Invites Slew of Funeral Cars

September 08, 2008 | | Comments 1

Residents in a small town in Georgia are worried that a local crematory will bring lines of funeral cars through their neighborhood on a daily basis. Owners of the crematory assure the residents that the number of funeral cars will not disturb their quiet neighborhood located in Marietta at the corner of U.S. 78 and Abington Drive. The property is zoned as an “Office Professional” area and the owners of the crematory are within the parameters of the types of businesses allowed to operate there.

But the residents that live around the new crematory are afraid they are going to see body after body loaded in and out of funeral cars throughout the day. They imagine ashes shooting out of the building’s smokestack with toxins polluting their air. Unfortunately, that’s their imagination getting the best of them. One woman even called the local police to report smoke coming from the crematory’s smokestack, even though it’s not even in operation yet.

The owner of the crematory is willing to work with the residents and the city to ensure that everybody is comfortable with the new facility. He’s made renovations to the building to help it blend in with the neighborhood and he has even agreed to use cargo vans instead of funeral cars to transport the bodies to the crematory. He is also willing to hold a sort of town meeting to answer any questions the residents have about the crematory. “I feel like I have been given a ticket for speeding because I did the speed limit,” he told a reporter recently after spending $250,000 on these things to make people happy. “This business is being persecuted by people who don’t want to learn about it.”

How would you feel if a crematory moved into your neighborhood? Would you be willing to let it set up shop or would you be more like the residents of this Georgia town? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
