Ghosts and Hearses are Good Business for Festival Owner

October 01, 2008 | | Comments 0

With Halloween fast approaching, festival owners and businesses all over the country are looking for hearses, funeral cars and other ways to scare people. Doug Waterby isn’t any different.

Waterby runs a Renaissance Festival in Syracuse. But for the upcoming season, he is using hearses and other “ghoulish” things to “frighten the most fearless” at his Screamer’s Hollow event. “This is not your mom and pop haunted house,” he said in an interview with a local newspaper. He’s spending more than $250,000 on hearses, robotic creatures and other things guaranteed to send chills down the spine of anybody that dares participate in the event.

This year, Waterby plans to feature three main attractions, including “Hollyweird,” “Twisted Terror” and “Hell’s Gate.” You’ll have to come to Syracuse to see what they are all about, though.

The demographic for the event is ages 16 to 26. If you’re too young, you might have some disturbing nightmares after you go home. If you’re too old, you may have a heart attack and not make it home. So participate at your own risk.

Waterby hopes to attract about 100,000 people to his Screamer’s Hollow event within the next three years. It’s an ideal way to keep the outdoor festival season going up until the cold weather hits.
