Fewer people Using Hearses as Cost of Death Skyrockets

My father-in-law passed away last weekend. I share this with you because I wanted to say something about the costs of hearses, funeral cars and other funeral luxuries that families wish to have when they say goodbye to their loved ones.

It broke my heart to watch my wife and my mother-in-law learn at the funeral home that he neglected to invest in any life insurance during his 75 years on this earth. You see, he was under the naïve impression that he was invincible and he was going to live forever. It also broke my heart as we sat in front of the funeral director and learned that they only thing his military benefits paid for was a cemetery plot and headstone in the local national cemetery. We couldn’t even afford to have a service or a graveside memorial as they had no money saved for such an event.

But this isn’t uncommon these days. Many families are choosing to forego using hearses, funeral cars, traditional caskets and other amenities that have come to be commonplace in funerals. Blame it on tough economic times or the realization that funerals are more for us rather than the deceased, but people are simply looking for less expensive alternatives in this area of life (or death).
